We’ve all been caught in the trap, it’s the inherent nature of training at a CrossFit facility. “I want to be shredded but I don’t want to lose any strength. I want to max my deadlift.. but my 5K time could improve. I need to work on gymnastics but I don’t want to dial in nutrition to lose a little extra weight”
Here’s the thing. Yes, over time constantly varied fitness should make you better at all of these things.. but without a direct plan it’s going to take time. Most of us are not genetic freaks. Yes, hard work pays off.. but you can’t just magically become great at everything all at once.
You probably remember the first six months of training.. you were getting better at everything, every day.
Maybe you went from hitting a globo gym a few times a week without any true direction to working out hard most days of the week. Maybe you went from sitting at a desk all day to taking your lunch hour at the gym. Maybe you were a distance runner that didn’t do much strength training.
My point is, your body began adapting quickly. You were literally learning how to move weight and strain at a neurological level. You starting training different energy systems. You became more metabolically prepared. PRs were regular. You dropped 10 pounds. It’s wonderful! Unicorns and rainbows! This is the Novice Effect.
Fast forward 6-8 ish months ~tire screech~ progress isn’t coming as quickly. You try adding more days of training, you stay late and train an extra 30 minutes but you‘re still not hitting all of the goals you want. You end up pushing yourself towards over-training with less than optimal recovery. The cycle continues.
This is normal. You want my advice? Set a goal. Hell, set a few but they can’t contradict each other.
When you hit this point, you’re going to have to make some sacrifices. If you want a different aesthetic, you may have to sacrifice some strength. If you want Strength, you’re going to have a hard time losing weight at the same time.
Nutrition is the answer to almost all of these issues, as well as ensuring that the extra work you may be doing is in line with your goals.
Meet with a coach. Set a goal. Let us hold you accountable. This will relieve some of the pressure you may be putting on yourself.
We hate to see you spinning your wheels without moving in the direction that you want but until you’re ready to listen, we’re not going to be able to help.
