Self Care isn’t Selfish.

Being a mom is hard. Being a working mom is really hard. Society expects us to work like we don’t have children, but to go home and raise our children like we don’t have a job. The guilt mother’s feel from being away from their children most of the day is something I’ve heard echoed from many of you on a regular basis. We can feel like we’re letting down our babies by not being there for them at times. But the saying that “You can’t pour from an empty cup” is spot on.

Moms, you need some time to yourself. Self care is insanely important in this day and age. And no, we don’t necessarily mean a bubble bath, a face mask, and a glass of wine while undisturbed by your family for an hour(though that does sound amazing sometimes). Sometimes it’s just 15 minutes of meditation. Or a class at the gym. Self care isn’t always as glamorous as it may seem on Instagram. But the thing is; having a little time to yourself will make you more present and happy once you are at home with the kids. Going home physically exhausted after a CrossFit class may seem like it would do the opposite, but for most of us; we’ve gotten to take out our frustrations on the barbell, and we’re more relaxed, have a clearer head, and are more present in the moment.

“The double responsibilities of work and home can mean more stress, which can prompt everything from insomnia and lowered immunity to mood swings and weight gain. “Excess stress boosts the output of the cortisol hormone, which in turn can increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, and anxiety,” says Brent W. Bost, M.D., an OB/GYN in Beaumont, Texas.”

We feel like we have to do it all. Run the kids to multiple practices. Cook dinner. Kiss booboos. Still be a loving wife. Keep up with a hectic work schedule. Will coming to our classes help you get in shape? Sure. But the real reason we want to see you out here is because we want you to feel a bit more fulfilled. You are a mom, but you’re still a person with desires and dreams. Don’t put yourself on the back burner 24/7. Being a mother can mean sacrifices, absolutely, but don’t give up who you are at your core. Not only will you be happier if you focus on you, even for just a few minutes to an hour each day, but we can guarantee your family life will be better as well.
